Urban Courtyard
With an extension wrapping around the house, this small courtyard garden in central Guildford, was going to be made even smaller. But the client loves to entertain and be outside surrounded with beautiful white flowers all year round.
The garden was zoned into three areas – cooking, entertaining, and relaxing. Brick-built raised beds helped delineate the areas, along with a rill which brings the sound of relaxing water to the garden (and helps with drainage). Sandstone pavers continue into the house for a natural look and seamless transition. The white-themed planting plan includes evergreens for all-round interest, daffodils and tulips that are followed by alliums and a selection of white and green herbaceous perennials. A complement of pots allows for seasonal displays and a splash of colour. A herb garden flanks the outside kitchen for easy reach and use, and a seat within the raised bed means the chef is never lonely.
“We are absolutely thrilled with Sally’s design; it brings us all that we needed and makes the garden feel bigger than it was before the renovation. She totally understood what we wanted, and the plant suggestions have been brilliant. We have something to look at all year round, and screening options mean, although we are in the middle of the city, we feel enclosed and private. I can’t wait for it to evolve and develop over time”
